Mustard patina7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() At any rate, I'd like to hear any opinions. or maybe I'm just a long winded kinda guy. Do several times to develop a layered effect. ![]() The patina will develop where the mustard isnt. just thought I should give some background. Mix a little red hot into the mustard and dab it on the blade. I apologize for the long winded explanation. I realize all steels aren't created equal, but should it be that much better in corrosion resistance? What I've tried at the point is yellow mustard, warm vinegar and formula 44-40 separately. I thought it would be a piece of cake (based on past experience), but I can't get it to take on much color. As a general rule, the longer you keep the blade with vinegar or mustard. I'm not really into sprayed coatings, so we talked about a vinegar patina. Your high-carbon steel knife can form a patina over time, learn everything you. So here is the issue: I am making a knife for a friend of mine, and he was definitely leaning toward a darkened blade. ![]() I've made several knives from this so far, and it's really nice stuff. Recently, I purchased some CPM D2 from Niagara. After living with and evaluating a few of those early D2 knives for a few years, I decided it really needed to be back in the mix. Using an acid like White Vinegar is food safe and in my experience gives the cleanest result for a patina. Wait until the following morning and wipe it off before cleaning. Smear it on in a pattern or cover it completely. Soon after, I started using stainless for most of my projects, so forcing a patina was a non-issue. Ordinary yellow mustard can be used on the blade to create a nice pattern patina on your Opinel knife. I only leave the mustard on for 15-20 minutes and the rinse with water. I thought about some simmilar experiment etching with water after sour (pickle) cucumbers (after natural lactic fermentation). Perhaps the process requires oxygen to be able to get to the steel. I have never thought about using it for etching Thakns for sharing. Some thoughts: It appears that the only areas that get a patina are the thinner areas where the mustard dried hard overnight. Just put the mustard in whatever pattern you want. Actually mustards usually contain acetic acid and citic acid + salt. This one is a 9 opinel that i use everyday in my kitchen and i cant remember when i did it. I decided to play around with a mustard and vinegar finish and found that it would take on a nice dark mottled look with a few applications. Here is a example of using mustard to force a patina. When I first started making knives a few years ago, I made a few out of Admiral's D2.
